With the topic of “Energy and Climate Change”, the 28th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM 28) hosted by Vietnam would take place from 19- 23/7/2010 in Đà Lạt City, Lâm Đồng province.

AMEM 28 was expected to have about 500 international visitors including Ministers of 10 ASEAN countries and of Japan, South Korea, China, India, New Zealand, Australia; leaders of the United States and Russia; ASEAN General Secretary; Director of ASEAN Energy Center; leaders of delegations participating in the Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) and members; representatives from countries; international reporters.

In Vietnamese side, participating in the event would be 100 people, including representatives from relevant Ministries and branches at Central and local level; domestic and foreign enterprises.

ASEAN Plan of Action on Energy Cooperation (APAEC) for the period of 2010-2015 was approved by AMEM 27 on 27/7/2009 in Myanmar including some items as ASEAN electricity network, cross-ASEAN gas pipe systems, coal and clean coal technology, energy preservation and efficiency, recycled energy, regional energy plans and policies, civil nuclear energy…

In addition, one of energy security issues ASEAN countries have paid special attention to is the connection of electricity networks of ASEAN countries and the connection of electricity networks of countries in the sub-Mekong river. The connection of electricity networks among countries in the region will bring in high economic efficiency for both investors and users, which expands the market of selling electricity to promote investments and especially ensure the energy security.

In Vietnam, based on the Ministry of Industry and Commerce’s proposal, the Government has agreed to appoint the Ministry to implement a project on technical supports for Laos and Cambodia, namely “Planning on exploiting hydro-electricity potentials in Laos and Cambodia and Planning on connecting points in electricity networks of Laos, Cambodia and neighboring countries” and Vietnam Electricity Group is assigned to organize the implementation.
