Minister Hoang Van Phong met with Vietnam Education Fund’s representative

On 09/6/2010, in Hanoi Minister of Science and Technology Hoang Van Phong had a cordial meeting with Ms. Elizabeth Dugan, member of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Education Fund (VEF).

Education Foundation –VEF was set up the US Parliament in 2000 in order to promote cooperation relationships between the US and Vietnam through educational exchange activities in fields of science, technology, mathematics and medicines.

In her visit, Ms. Elizabeth Dugan informed the Minister of the Workshop for VEF’s postgraduates, which would take place in next August in Ho Chi Minh City. Ms. Elizabeth Dugan hoped that Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) would send officials to attend and listen to postgraduates’ desires when they return to their home country. Also in this August, VEF would invite 12 US famous professors to participate in the selection of Vietnamese conditions who are qualified to study in the US for the coming time. Ms. Elizabeth Dugan shared with the Ministry about the Book “VEF Achievements” which was published last May and the Project on publishing a book of post-graduation information for the coming time.

In the meeting, Minister Hoàng Văn Phong highly appreciated good cooperation relationships between MOST and VEF. VEF’s efforts, together with the active participation of scientists and engineers of Vietnam and the US have been the sustainable bridge between the two countries. The Ministry welcomed and wanted Vietnamese postgraduates would return to the country and hoped that they would be the human resource group which could contribute significantly to research in Vietnam. MOST has been ready to invest budget, facilities and could create favorable conditions for scientists to do research and work. The Minister was also glad to accept Ms. Elizabeth Dugan’s invitation to attend the coming workshop and affirmed that this would be an opportunity to understand desires of postgraduates.

So far 306 Vietnamese outstanding candidates have been selected to be VEF postgraduates and take part in post –graduate programs in 70 US leading universities. 254 people have taken part in doctor programs and 52 people in master programs. Among 81graduated people, 60 have returned to Vietnam and the remaining people have participated in professional activities in the US or are taking part in doctor programs with different funding sources.
