Working session with the Director of Global Language of Business in Asia – Pacific GS1

In the morning of December 06, 2016, in the office of the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ), Deputy Director of STAMEQ Nguyen Nam Hai together with representative leaders of some agencies in the Directorate had a meeting and working sessions with Mr. Patrik Jonasson – Director of Public Administration in the Asia-Pacific region of the international Global Language of Business (International GS1) on strengthening bar coding in Vietnam.



In the meeting, the two parties had brief introduction on key activities of International GS1 as well those of GS1 Vietnam, exchanged and shared experience on bar coding and discussed about cooperation opportunities between International GS1 and STAMEQ in order to support GS1 Vietnam to better develop on planning and implementing training programs on Global Data Standards (GDS) in Vietnam; support GS1 Vietnam to restructure its organization; participated in the pilot project relating to GDS chaired by APEC and GS1; apply GS1 standards and solutions in smart cities… The Global Languages of Business Vietnam (GS1 Vietnam) is the National Numeric and Bar Coding Organization of Vietnam under STAMEQ, which is recognized the official member of International GS1 from May 1995 and granted with the national code GS1 of 893.

GS1 Vietnam is the sole representative organization of Vietnam in International GS1 and represents GS1 to implement the GS1 System in Vietnam. GS1 Vietnam managed the national coding bank of 893, issuing codes of businesses and help manufacturers, distributions, wholesalers, retailers and other relevant organizations to apply bar coding in production, business and service provision as well as application of numeric and bar coding for electronic data interchange (EDI).

Currently, the State management for bar coding activities has been assigned by the Prime Minister to the Ministry of Science and Technology (STAMEQ) and the State management is complied with Decision No. 45/2002/QĐ-TTg of the Prime Minister, issued on March 27, 2002 on “Regulating the State management on bar coding and State management agencies on bar coding” and Decision No. 15/2006/QĐ-BKHCN dated August 23, 2006 on “Regulating the issuance, usage and management of numeric and bar coding”.

The GS1 system can be divided into 5 main groups of standards as follows: Standards on numeric codes; Standards on bar codes; Standards on electronic information packages; Standards on global networks; Standards on Mobile Commerce.
